I know Chonnabot is a big tourist attraction in Khon Kaen. Is it worth visiting or is it just a tourist trap?(give a different answer) .
I was in Khon Kaen last year and one of the best experiences during my visit there was the Chonnabot district. Yes, the place is regarded as a tourist attraction by tourists but that doesn't mean it lost its roots and traditions, their main purpose is still to make the silk and the production is mainly intended for national use. The locals hardly speak a word of English (we had a Thai guide with us) so they don't seem to be affected by the tourists that keep showing up in their neighbourhood. Still, they are very happy to show you how they dye and weave the silk and sell some of the pieces they make. Chonabot is especially famous for Mudmee fabric.
Chonabot is some 40 km east of Khon Kaen, you can get there by bus but you have to switch in Ban Phaen so it's better to hire a car with a Thai driver to help you to communicate with the locals.
